Course Description

This workshop will address a variety of special issues that may be encountered when working with traumatized males: clinical approaches that are effective responses for the spectrum of dissociation, managing male aggression, how to support males in their efforts to maintain positive masculinities, ethical considerations in managing counter-trauma and vicarious traumatization responses,  enhanced skills for self-care, and special issues that emerge during the process of a longer-term therapeutic relationship. Participants will be invited to submit case material in advance of the workshop, which will allow additional consultative interaction during the session to address themes and ethical issues that are represented in these clinical cases. Special attention will be given to address clinical dilemmas and impasses that are reflected in those clinical cases.

Learning Objectives – Participants will be able to:

  • Recognize four ethical clinical approaches for managing common dilemmas and impasses
  • Distinguish four different dynamics that accompany responses throughout the spectrum of dissociation
  • Identify four risk factors for counter-trauma and vicarious traumatization when working with traumatized males
  • Utilize the tools of self-reflection to explore ethical considerations of their own vulnerabilities for counter-trauma and vicarious traumatization
